THE ART OF CREATION BY DR. NORMAN R. SONGCO
When I set out to create this piece, my inspiration was drawn from one of the most famous artworks in history: Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam.” I’ve always been fascinated by how that iconic fresco captures a single moment of creation—a divine spark of life transferred from one hand to another.
I wanted to reimagine that same concept through a steampunk lens, applying it to the world of dentistry.
In my version, I replaced God and Adam with two mechanical hands of my own design. On the left, a hand of polished bronze, complete with articulated joints and intricate gears, holds open a dental mouth. On the right, a hand of similar craftsmanship reaches out with a precision dental instrument, ready to create a perfect smile.
To me, the connection is clear. Just as God gave life to Adam, a dentist brings a smile back to life. The piece represents the blending of artistry and precision that is essential in my work. It’s a tribute to the craftsmanship and technology that allow us to create something beautiful. This isn’t just a sign for a clinic; it’s a reflection of my philosophy: that dentistry is a form of creation—a precise and beautiful art form.
